Mark Shenton: Which musical will be victorious in Broadway’s bumper year?

This Sunday the Tony Awards will be presented, marking the culmination of a really vibrant season in New York especially for new musicals.

It marks a turnaround from the late 1980s and 1990s. During this period, Andrew Lloyd Webber and his lyricists Don Black and Christopher Hampton took the award for best score in 1995 for Sunset Boulevard unopposed, since there were no other original scores that could be nominated.

In a programme welcome for the latest show at the Other Palace Theatre, Lloyd Webber (the theatre’s proprietor) sets out his ambition that the London venue will “become a genuine hub for anyone interested in musical theatre”. He adds: “This season only two new musicals will have been produced in the West End compared with 13 on Broadway.”...
